Knee replacement surgery or arthroplasty is a routine operation that involves replacing a damaged, worn or diseased knee with an artificial joint. Adults of any age can be considered for a knee replacement, although most are carried out on people of age 60 and above. The knee is a hinge joint which provides motion at the point where the thigh meets the lower leg. During the knee replacement, the end of the femur bone is removed and replaced with a metal shell. These artificial components of a total knee replacement are referred to as the prosthesis.
